Chapter 4 - Mr. Lugubrious
“Harry, Ron, wake up! Wake up!” yelled a voice in the room. Harry opened his eyes slowly to see Hermione tapping him hard on the face.
“What…” started Harry but she cut her off.
“Mrs. Weasley is furious. We’ve been trying to get up two up for ages now. We’re going to Diagon Alley. Dumbledore left the booklist last night,” she said pulling off the covers of them. Harry sat up.
“When are we leaving?”
“Now! Didn’t you hear me?” she said and she went over to Ron and shook him.
“What?! Five more minutes,” muttered Ron and rolled over. Hermione pulled out her wand and muttered something pointing it at Ron and water came out of the tip of her wand and hit Ron in the face, making him jump up.
“Hermione! That was not necessary. All you had to do was wake me,” moaned Ron wiping his face. Hermione glared at him.
“If you’re not down in ten minutes, we’re leaving you both,” she snarled pocketing her wand and she marched out of the room.
*** Harry and Ron went downstairs ten minutes later to see Mrs. Weasley running around the house trying to gather things up for Diagon Alley. They went into the kitchen to see Hermione and Ginny sitting at the shiny oak table talking; Hermione scratching Crookshanks.
“About time,” said Ginny rolling her eyes at them, “we tried waking you guys up about five times. Neither of you woke so Hermione tried.”
“And she succeeded,” said Ron glaring at her.
“So where are the book lists?” asked Harry sitting down next to Hermione and Ron next to Ginny. Ginny reached in her pocket and took out two envelopes. She handed one to Ron and another to Harry. He opened it and saw two pieces of parchment. One was the usual reminder that the first term started September first and the other was their book list. Harry unfolded it and started to read.
“I only have five classes. And all of them, except for Care of Magical Creatures, require new books. What for?” he asked raising his head.
“Well, you are seeking a career different then others so they need to match you up with the classes you need to take for that career,” said Hermione.
“How many classes are you taking then?” asked Ron to Hermione.
“Seven,” replied Hermione staring at him.
“The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 7, by Miranda Goshawk. That’s the only one I am familiar with. The rest are books for an Auror I guess,” said Harry.
“Yeah, I suppose,” replied Hermione looking at his book list. At that moment, Mrs. Weasley ran into the room.
“It’s about time you two. Everyone ready? We’re going by Floo Powder,” she said walking over to the fireplace in the kitchen and they all got up and followed her. When they reached the fireplace, she reached in her cloak and pulled out a bag and he wand. She took her wand and pointed it at the fireplace and muttered “incendio” and the fireplace erupted with bright flames. She put the wand back in her cloak and opened the bag.
“Grab a handful everyone,” she said and she passed it around. They each grabbed some of the Floo Powder and Harry gave it back to Mrs. Weasley.
“Harry, you first.” Harry threw the powder into the flames, which turned an emerald green, and shouted, “Diagon Alley”. Harry felt the sucking sensation once more and he closed his eyes and waited till he felt the floor. He opened his eyes a little to see a sign through a fireplace that said “Diagon Alley” so he moved his arm to grab it but he saw it moving further away. He tried to reach out with his other arm but he couldn’t. He couldn’t feel any part of his body. He closed his eyes again and he then he started to spin.
Oh please let this stop, please. Where is this taking me?, pleaded Harry in his mind. After a couple more second, the spinning stopped and Harry felt his feet collide with the ground and he fell with a crash into a pile of soot.
“Who’s there?” called a voice that Harry recognized. He opened his eyes to see a dark shop that he had never been in. He stood up and dusted himself off and stepped out of the fireplace. He could hardly see anything but he did not dare light his wand as he might get caught. He looked around at what he could see and saw shelves and glass cases everywhere.
“Who’s there?” called the voice again and finally Harry recognized it. It was the voice of Lucius Malfoy.
I said who’s there! Lumos,” came Lucius voice and Harry ducked down.
“There’s no one there Lucius. Lets get on with business so I can leave,” came a wheezy voice that Harry did not recognize. The light from Lucius’s wand went out and Harry heard him talking.
“As I was saying, if you or any other of your pals find the Potter boy or see him, him and any of his friends, kill them and bring them to me. I believe that the Dark Lord should have a reward for you,” came Lucius’s voice again.
“But how do we know what his damn friends look like?” hissed the man at him.
“You don’t think I came unprepared, now do you, Lugubrious? I brought pictures. The bushy haired one is his girlfriend, do as much to her as possible, the red hairs are the Weasleys. What a disgrace to pure-bloods. I would like to see those smiles wiped off their faces. Also, if you can get anybody from Dumbledore’s little league, kill them too,” demanded Lucius and Harry could feel his blood running. He knew where he was now. This was another store in Knockturn Alley.

“Business is done then, Malfoy.”
“See you in the dark side then, Lugubrious,” and with a loud crack, Lucius dissaparated. Harry moved forward a little more to see an old, tall and very thin man with very dark hair. He looked like an old snake and he was holding a some papers in his hand which Harry suspected were the pictures. The man turned around and Harry knew this was his only chance. He ran towards the door which was right next to the man. As he made it there, the man turned around and spoke.
“Mr. Potter, how nice to see you,” and he thrusted his hands in his cloak and withdrew a long thin wand.
He raised it and started to mutter but Harry was thinking faster than usual. He turned around and picked up a glass box from the table nearest to him and threw it at the man but he broke it with a jet of light from his wand and as he was distracted, Harry ran out the door and down a narrow passageway. He turned around to see the man running after him. The man sent a stunning spell at Harry and Harry ducked behind a dumpster and the spell missed. He looked up to see the stairs that lead to Diagon Alley. As he got up to run, the old man appeared in front of him with his wand raised in his right hand and a picture in his left.
“Well, Mr. Potter, I thought that I would have a hard time with you since you have escaped the Dark Lord six times but now I see, you’re going to be the easiest. Incendio,” he said and he lit the picture on fire with his wand. “Now, it’s your turn. Avada Ke…”
“Expelliarmus,” screamed a voice from behind the man and his wand went flying into the air and into the dumpster. The man turned around and behind him was Ginny, Hermione with her wand out, Ron, and Mrs. Weasley.
“Well, I see you’ve come to help your little friend here. Too bad that’s not going to work Miss Granger.”
“How do you know my name?” asked Hermione.
“He has orders from Lucius to kill us Hermione,” shouted Harry from behind the man. The man started walking towards Hermione and the rest and Mrs. Weasley pulled out her wand.
“Stop where you are now!” shouted Mrs. Weasley but the man kept on walking slowly and held up his hand.
“I said stop!” shouted Mrs. Weasley but the man jumped towards them and in front of Mrs. Weasley who screamed.
“Impedimenta!” the man screamed with his hand in her face and she flew back into the street of Diagon Alley.
“Stupefy,” said Hermione and the man dropped on the floor and they all ran to Mrs. Weasley. Harry got up and walked over to them, wiping the dirt off his clothes.
“Are you ok Mrs. Weasley?” asked Harry.
“I’ll live,” she replied standing up. “Who was that Harry?”
“I don’t know, I saw the sign for Diagon Alley when I was in the fireplace but I don’t know how I ended up here. I saw the man talking to Lucius Malfoy and Lucius told him to go after us. I tried to run but he caught up. Good things you guys came.”
“All righ’ there you guys?” yelled a voice over the heads off all the shoppers in Diagon Alley. They all turned to see Hagrid walking over to them.
“Hi Hagrid. Nice to see you,” said Mrs. Weasley politely pocketing her wand.
“Nice to see you all. How yeh been Harry?”
“Good,” replied Harry.
“Ron, Hermione, Ginny,” said Hagrid looking at each of them beaming. “And what are you all doing ‘round Knockturn Alley?” he asked looking at Harry suspiciously.
“Umm, Hagrid, I wonder if you can take that man over there to Dumbledore. He was after Harry. We came here to try and find Harry and we saw him attacking him,” whispered Mrs. Weasley pointing behind them to Hagrid and Hagrid turned red.
“Who was trying to attack Harry?” shouted Hagrid and he pushed them aside, “I don’ see anybody.”
“That’s impossible. He was right there,” said Ginny pointing to the spot where the man had lain before. Hagrid walked over and bent down and touched the floor.
“Must have apparated,” he said looking at them.
“We would have heard him though. We didn’t hear anything,” Hermione persisted.
“Well, I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. This is a very dodgy place. Yeh don’ want to be ‘round here. Let’s go,” said Hagrid standing up. He walked over to them and they went into the crowd of people.
“I’ll leave you all to your school shoppin’. I have loads of things to do. See yeh soon,” said Hagrid. They all said by to him and he disappeared into the crowd.
“Well, off to Gringotts. Let’s go and keep close,” noted Mrs. Weasley and they took off towards the snowy white building that was Gringotts Bank.

“Vault eight hundred and three,” screeched the goblin as they reached a small door in the stone passageway deep within Gringotts Bank. They all climbed out the cart and the goblin lead them to the door. The goblin took out the key and unlocked the door. A lot of green smoke came billowing out, and as it cleared, the Weasleys gasped. Inside were mounds of gold coins. Apparently, they never had this much money in their bank before.
“Bloody hell,” muttered Ron as they walked in. Hermione and Harry looked each other and smiled.
“Is this all ours?” asked Ginny.
“Yes darling. Thanks to Sirius,” sobbed Mrs. Weasley. She had tears coming out of her eyes. “Get out your money bags and fill it up.” Ron and Ginny smiled as they filled up their bags. When they were done, their bags weighed a few pounds more than it usually did.
“Ok Hermione, off to your vault,” said Mrs. Weasley and they left and got into the cart and headed to Hermione’s vault.
*** “Everybody read to go?” asked Mrs. Weasley about half an hour later. They all had their school books and extra things that they would need. Ron bought a new set of robes and so did Ginny.
“Yes Mrs. Weasley, we’re all ready,” replied Hermione.
“Alright then follow me,” replied Mrs. Weasley and she turned around and started walking at a fast pace. They reached a small brick bulding and they walked in to see five fireplaces lined up next to each other.
“Ok. We’re going to do this two by two, Ron and Harry go first, then Ginny and Hermione,” commanded Mrs. Weasley.
“What about our stuff?” asked Ron. Mrs. Weasley pulled out her wand, pointed it at their luggage, muttered “evanesco” and they disappeared. Then she pointed to a fireplace.
“Incendio,” she said and a burst of flames erupted in the fireplace. Harry and Ron walked forward and Ron grabbed a handful of Floo Powder and threw it in the fire. Then they both stepped in the emerald green fire and at the same time, shouted “Headquarters.”
*** The next several weeks at the Order of the Phoenix headquarters were dedicated to cleaning and just like it was at Grimmauld Place, Harry did not find Headquarters the least bit interesting. They spent most the days working and catching up on reading some of the school books that they had bought at Diagon Alley.
July 31st came without Harry even recognizing. He had went to sleep the night before and only worried about his apparition test that he would be taking the next day. He had completely forgotten that the next day was his birthday but he was about the only one that forgot. He woke up to see Mrs. Weasley, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione sitting on Ron’s bed with a cake in Mrs. Weasley’s hand.
“What’s with the cake?” asked Harry getting up from bed.
“Don’t you remember Harry? Today is your birthday,” replied Mrs. Weasley stunned.
“No it’s not. My birthday is on the thirty-first…I think,” replied Harry laughing.
“Umm Harry? Today is the thirty-first,” said Hermione staring at him stunned. Harry walked over to the calendar on the wall and then he turned around with his mouth open.
“You’re not kidding. I totally forgot. Well, thanks,” laughed Harry scratching his head. He went and blew out the candles on the cake and the rest left the room except for Ron.
“You really didn’t know that today was your birthday?” asked Ron.
“No. I forgot. I guess I was too busy trying to prepare for the apparation test,” replied Harry.
“Oh yeah. Mum said we’re leaving around two since we’re walking there. Hermione is coming too. Hers is the same time as ours. Well, we’d better get downstairs. Mum found a swarm of doxies inside the cabinet.”

“Concentrate Harry. Concentrate. Lets try again and remember, just let all you’re emotions out. It’ll be easier that way.”
Harry was staring at a very tall man that looked no older than thirty. The man had square glasses on his straight nose. He had long, blonde hair down to his shoulders. Harry was in a stone room with nothing in it except for him and the man. He had tried twice already to apparate to the other side of the room but he just couldn’t do it. He had to clear his mind.
“Are you ready to try again Harry?” asked the man.
“Yes,” replied Harry.
“Ok remember, just don’t think about it. Just watch yourself in your mind appearing at the other side of the room. If you see it and feel it, it’ll happen.” Harry closed his eyes for the third time and then he finally saw it. He saw himself in his mind appearing on the other side of the room and his body felt light. He heard a loud crack and he opened his eyes to see himself staring at a wall then he heard clapping behind him and turned around to see the man clapping.
“Well done Harry. Now for out last try, I’ll have you apparate downstairs to the Atrium. I’ll meet you there. On the count of three. One…two…three.” Two loud cracks filled the room and Harry felt his hair stand up as he felt his feet his feet hit the floor. He opened his eyes again to see the man standing next to him.
“Well done Harry. Here’s your license.” The man handed him a card from his pocket and Harry put it in his.
“Now, if I am right, you’re now of age and are allowed to use magic outside of school,” asked the man.
“Yes,” replied Harry.
“Well, just a warning. Use that privilege carefully or it can be taken away. Goodbye Mr. Potter,” and with a loud crack, the man dissaparated. Harry turned around to go sit down but…
“AARRGGHH!” yelled Harry kneeling down and clutching his forehead. Two loud cracks sounded through room and he heard footsteps. He closed his eyes and pressed down on his scar. The pain that he felt was nothing like before. It seared through his head.
“Harry. What’s wrong?” asked a voice and he felt four hands on him. The pain started to ease and he let go of his scar and looked up to see the faces of Hermione and Ron staring down him and they pulled him up.
“It’s my scar,” said Harry rubbing his scar again.
“Do you think it’s You-Know-Who?” asked Ron.
“Oh for god’s sake, Ron please, use his name,” said Hermione rolling her eyes.
“Yeah, it’s him. He’s mad. Very mad,” replied Harry.
“C’mon Harry. Mum’s waiting outside. Let’s go and we’ll talk about it later,” said Ron and they headed towards to door.

Chapter 5: The Giver of Life
“Can we go now, mum, please?” begged Ron. Ginny, Hermione, and Tonks were peeling potatoes while Ron and Harry were trying to cut onions. They were all in the kitchen preparing for dinner. Harry had talked to Mrs. Weasley the day before about his scar hurting and she suggested that it was probably because of something that Dumbledore or the Order did and she moved on to another subject. Something made Harry and the rest think that she knew something they didn’t.
“You can’t go out now. It’s almost getting dark and you want to practice dueling now?” she replied with her back to them. She was at the fireplace stirring her pot of stew.
“Yes please mum. We have about an hour till it gets dark. And plus, Tonks is with us,” Ginny piped up. Mrs. Weasley turned around and looked at Tonks.
“They are right, Molly. I am a member of the Order. You don’t think that I’d let anything happen to them do you?” asked Tonks raising an eyebrow at Mrs. Weasley.
“Well…I guess you can go…but be back soon,” she added.
“Ahhh, thanks mum,” screeched Ginny and she hugged her mother. They all went upstairs to grab their wands and they were off.
They walked out of the front door and watched as it disappeared slowly then they set off into the woods. They walked for about five minutes until they reached a clearing with large rocks and was surrounded by trees. They walked to the middle and Tonks spoke.
“Ok guys. We’ll have Harry and Ron go first. Remember, no tough spells. Just try to get your opponent to a place that they have to surrender. I’ll be here watching just in case…” she trailed off.
Harry and Ron took each of the opposite ends of the field and they got ready.
“On the count of three,” said Tonks, “One…two…three.” As Harry was quicker than Ron, he was the first to shout a spell.
“Expelliarmus,” shouted Harry and a white jet of light shot at Ron.
“Protego,” screamed Ron and the light shot back to Harry who ducked behind a rock to dodge it.
“C’mon Harry. I know you can do better,” shouted Tonks. Harry looked up from the rock to see a red light miss his head by inches. He jumped out quickly and pointed his wand towards Ron.
“Talantellegra,” shouted Harry and the spell hit Ron squarely in the chest and his feet started to dance.
“Gotcha Ron,” laughed Harry putting down his wand but that was a mistake.
“No Harry! You don’t ever throw down your guard!” yelled Tonks but it was too late.
“Waddiwasi,” yelled Ron and Harry shot backwards and hit a tree and he fell face first. Hermione put her hand to her mouth and Ron pointed his wand at his dancing feet and muttered: “finite”. His feet stopped dancing and he ran over to Harry.
“Good job Ron,” said Tonks clapping. Ron stood over Harry and pointed his wand at him.
“Stupefy,” he said as a red jet of light shot from his wand but Harry jumped up at the last minute and jumped over and the spell hit the tree.
“Expelliarmus,” screamed Harry and Ron’s wand flew out of his hand; Harry still crouching on the floor with his wand pointing at Ron. Ron turned around to run for his wand but…
“Impedimenta,” Harry said and Ron slowed down and fell backwards. Harry ran over to him and pointed his wand at Ron’s chest.
“Sorry. Stupefy,” said Harry and Ron’s head fell to the floor, stunned. Tonks, Ginny, and Hermione ran over to them and they all congratulated him.
“Good job Harry. I thought you were done for there for a minute,” said Tonks smiling at him. She pointed her wand at Ron and muttered “Enervate”. Ron moved his head and opened his eyes then he sat up.
“That was very good, Harry. I thought I had you there,” said Ron, also smiling at him.
“But you did well too, Ron. You and Tonks weren’t the only ones who thought that you had me. I thought so too,” replied Harry and he helped Ron up.
Hermione and Ron went next. They battled it out and even though Ron ended up winning by using the full-body bind on Hermione, she had all of them startled. She cornered him a couple of times and threw a couple of spells that none of them had used before. As it was getting dark, they all saw sparks fly up in the air from where Headquarters was and they knew it was time to go in.
Dinner was a fun affair. They all talked about their dueling while Mrs. Weasley just listened and smiled. After dinner, they talked to Tonks about what it is like to be an Auror. She explained to them in more detail than they could have imagined about the kind of work they do. After that, they played a game which involved Tonks switching her looks as she was a Metamorphmagus.
***
The next few weeks at Headquarters were fun even though they had to help Mrs. Weasley keep it clean. When she was able, Molly would take them out into the woods to practice dueling. Unfortunately, it wasn't as often as the kids would like because Molly was busy. In addition to helping her clean, Molly made sure that they went through their school books to keep refreshed of what they'd learned the previous year.
***
The last day of vacation came quicker than they all anticipated. Mrs. Weasley made a big dinner and some of the order also dropped by. Fred and George were there and so were Lupin, Tonks, and Mr. Weasley. McGonagall dropped by once to wish them luck for their last year. They had a very enjoyable dinner and Harry was very glad, for once, to be Harry Potter, the boy who lived.

Everybody woke up on time the next day. Harry and Ron got dressed and started packing up their school things. Harry opened his trunk and took out some of the clothes in it. He looked into his trunk and saw shattered glass.
“Ron, come here,” said Harry and Ron walked over to him carrying a set of newly bought robes and stared into his trunk.
“What is that?” asked Ron staring at it with a puzzled look.
“It’s the mirror Sirius gave me two years ago. I broke it at the end of our fifth year,” replied Harry. He could remember himself thrusting it into him trunk violently at the thought of never seeing Sirius again. Harry leaned over and grabbed his wand and reached in his pillow and pulled out the other mirror.
“Here,” he said giving the mirror to Ron who took it carefully.
“Are you sure you don’t want to hold on to that for now?” asked Ron.
“No. You and Hermione can use it,” he said and then he pointed his wand at the broken glass at the bottom of his trunk, “Reparo”. The glass flew back together to form the small square mirror that it once was. Harry picked it up and stared at it.
“So, how do you use that?” said a voice behind them and they turned around to see Hermione holding Crookshanks and Ginny brushing her hair. They were all packed and had their trunk behind them. They both walked into the room and stood next to Harry and Ron.
“You just say the name of the person who has it in the mirror and their face will appear,” replied Harry. “Try it.” Ron put the mirror to his face and said “Harry” and looked into it, Ginny and Hermione behind him.
A face started to materialize in the mirror. It was not the face of Ron but of Harry’s.
“Brilliant!” muttered Ron.
“I could see you on mine too,” said Harry.
“But how do you turn it off?” asked Ginny.
“Ummm…” started Harry. He had not really thought of that before. Sirius had only mentioned how to make it work but never to turn it off. But then an idea sprang in his mind.
“I think I’ve got it,” he said to them and he lifted the mirror to his face. “Mischief managed.”
The face in the mirror started to disappear and within a few seconds, Harry could only see himself.
“Can we use it too?” asked Ginny looking at Harry.
“Umm…sure if you want. Just get it either from Ron or Hermione,” said Harry.
“Ron, Ginny, Hermione, and Harry, get down here! It’s ten o’clock. We have to go!” screamed Mrs. Weasley’s voice from downstairs. Ginny walked to the door, grabbed her trunk and turned around to them.
“Aren’t you coming?” she asked. Ron put the mirror in his pocket, closed his trunk, and followed her with it. Harry put his mirror in his trunk and the rest of his clothes in it. He closed his trunk and made to follow them but Hermione stopped him.
“We’ll be down in a few minutes,” she said looking at them. Ginny and Ron looked at each other, smirked, and closed the door as they went down the staircase. Hermione turned around and looked at Harry.
“I think we’d better sit,” she said to him. They sat down, Harry looking at her puzzled.
“You should put a charm on that and put it in your trunk so it won’t spill,” she said pointing to the Pensieve. Harry nodded. He knew that she was trying to play for time.
“What is it, Hermione?” asked Harry. She sighed and put Crookshanks down who curled up on the bed between them.
“Remember last year, Harry, the thing between us?” she asked looking into his bright green eyes.
“How could I forget? It was a crazy year. Is that what you want to talk about? I know you don’t want another year like that Hermione. I know…I know…” he took a deep breath, “I know you don’t like me anymore and even though…”
“But that’s where you’re wrong Harry. I still do like you.” Harry looked at her with his mouth open.
“I just don’t want another year like last. I am hoping to get a job as a teacher and I can’t get anything else to damage my record Harry. All the fights we had with Malfoy and his crew last year was enough to get anybody suspended and I just don’t want that anymore,” she said and Harry could sense a hint of worry in her voice.
“So, what do you want me to do?” asked Harry.
“I don’t really know. I guess…I guess that what will come will come and we’ll just have to meet it when it does,” she replied smiling. Harry smiled back at her and he started to get up but she put a hand on his. He looked back at her to see her closer than she was before.
“I really like you, Harry, and I don’t want anything to come between us. Just know that,” she said and she leaned in and kissed him. Harry kissed her back and he felt like nothing in the world could stop that moment.
“Harry! Hermione!” screamed a voice outside the door and they broke apart. Hermione looked at Harry and smiled while Harry just sat there. She stood up and walked to the door.
“C’mon Crookshanks,” she said and the cat went purring after her. She opened the door to see Ginny standing there.
“Mum said hurry up!” she said firmly and she exchanged a look with Hermione. Hermione smiled at her and she giggled while she went downstairs with Hermione following her.
Harry stayed sitting on his bed thinking about what just happened. It was like a soundless film rolling in his head. He could see what happened and it kept playing back but he could not think straight. A knock at the door broke his trance and he looked up to see Ron at the door.
“Mum said to come help you pack. We’re leaving in a few,” he said walking in. Harry just nodded. Ron walked over to him and stared at him.
“Harry? What happened?” he asked. Harry looked up at him.
“She kissed you huh?” he asked smiling. Harry nodded again and finally found his voice.
“But why? After she said that we should take things slowly, she did it. I swear I don’t understand girls,” said Harry throwing a set of clothes into his trunk.
They silently packed Harry’s things into his trunk. Harry put a charm on the Pensieve so that it would not spill and he set it between a set of clothes in his trunk and he closed it. Ron went and grabbed Hedwig’s cage with the sleeping bird in it and they headed downstairs.

The trip to King’s Cross was very exciting. They took the train from Godric’s Hollow all the way to King’s Cross. They chatted excitedly about the year to come and what they would do after Hogwarts. Mrs. Weasley also shared about her days at Hogwarts as a seventh year.
When they arrived at King’s Cross, they got off the train and headed off to the barrier that they would go through to get to Platform 9¾. When they got through the barrier, they were greeted with a surprise.
Tonks, Lupin, Moody, and Mr. Weasley were all there waiting for them.
“What are you guys doing here?” asked Ginny.
“We’ve come to wish you guys good luck and to make sure that you got aboard safely,” replied Tonks. They helped them load their luggage onto the Hogwarts Express and then they shared goodbyes.
“Hope to see you all nice and well at the end of the year,” said Lupin.
“Yeah. Don’t worry, we won’t let anything happen to Harry,” said Hermione and they all laughed. While they were all talking amongst themselves, Moody pulled Harry aside to talk to him.
“Potter, all I want to say is to watch yourself this year ok? As you know…”
“This is the last year that Voldemort has to get me and he will do anything to kill me. I know Professor and don’t worry.”
“Just warning you, Harry. I know how you, Weasley, and Granger like to wander. You must not do that this year. If you see anything or hear anything, Dumbledore is around, and so are McGonagall and Snape. Go to them and…good luck,” he added. Harry smiled and turned to leave but Mad-eye grabbed his shoulder.
“One more thing…” he started.
“Harry hurry, the train is about to leave,” yelled Mrs. Weasley behind him.
“I found this in the wreck of your parent’s house years ago. I don’t know if it means anything but I just want you to have it,” he said and he pulled out a locket from his cloak and gave it to Harry. It was golden and shaped like a heart with carvings and symbols on it and a long golden chain attached to it.
“Thanks,” said Harry staring at it.
“I never found out how to open it. Maybe you can,” said Moody. A loud whistle blew through the air and guards started walking along the train closing the doors.
“Go Potter, and remember CONSTANT VIGILANCE!” Harry smiled and he could have sworn that he saw a smile flicker on his face. He put the locket in his pocket and he ran over to the train. Mrs. Weasley gave him one last hug and Lupin muttered “good luck”, and then he got on the train. He found the compartment that Hermione, Ron, and Ginny were seated at and they waved out the window to the rest until the train went to far and they could not see them anymore.
“What did Moody want with you?” asked Hermione.
“Just the usual. For me to be careful and so on,” replied Harry.
“But he’s right you know. We can’t do anything dangerous this year,” said Hermione pulling out a book from a bag she had on the floor and started reading it.
“I know Hermione. But he also gave me this,” said Harry pulling out the locket from his pocket.
“Whoa,” muttered Ron.
“What is that?” asked Ginny.
“I don’t know. It’s some kind of locket but he said that he’d never been able to open it,” replied Harry staring at it.
“Where’d that come from?” asked Hermione sharply.
“From my parent’s house…why?” asked Harry suspiciously.
“Those are very rare. Hand it here,” she said and Harry gave it to her. Crookshanks jumped up next to her and sat on her lap while Pigwidgeon went crazy in his cage.
“This is not an ordinary locket. These kinds of lockets have a special power. Only an assigned person can open them. They store memories. It can be memories of your parent’s, Harry. I’ve read about these,” said Hermione handing it back to him. Harry examined it again but did not try to open it but instead, he put it around his neck.
The train ride was quite eventful. Hermione quizzed them on things that they would need to know for their N.E.W.T’s while Harry and Ron played Chess. When Hermione had finally given up, she and Ginny started talking about something private that neither Ron nor Harry cared about.
The ride to Hogwarts would have been perfect if it was not for something that happened after they all changed into their school robes. They were all dressed and were talking amongst themselves when they heard footsteps approaching their compartment.
“Who could that be?” asked Ginny.
“Three guesses who,” said Ron and he put his hand in his pocket. Soon enough, Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle entered the compartment wearing their usual sneers. Malfoy had gotten a lot taller since their last year and Crabbe and Goyle had gotten even bigger than they already were, and that’s saying something.
“Well look who it is. The Potter Society,” said Malfoy sneering at them. Crookshanks hissed at them and the two owls stopped hooting and it seemed that they were listening.
“What do you want, Malfoy?” asked Ginny standing up to him. This took Malfoy by surprise but as usual, the usual sneer reappeared on his face.
“Watch who you’re talking to, Weasley!” he said sharply.
“Get out!” yelled Ginny. Ron also stood up and Crabbe and Goyle flexed their muscles.
“Not going to start a fight with us are you now? Two on three? I don’t think that’s quite fair do you?” said Malfoy laughing.
“Unless you can’t count, Malfoy, you should see two more people sitting here,” said Hermione glaring at him.
“Oh shut up, you filthy little mudblood.”
SMACK
Ginny had used all of the strength that she could muster and slapped Malfoy across the face. The force of the smack sent him tumbling over to Crabbe. He stood up straight again, his face serious.
“I think it’s time we teach these four who to not mess with boys. Do it NOW!” he yelled and Crabbe and Goyle took something out their pockets.

Nobody saw what it was but next second, the compartment was filled with a very dense fog that no body could see through. Harry stood up and lunged his hands in his robes and took out his wand even though he could not see anything. He heard Ginny scream and something hit the floor.
“Expelliarmus,” yelled Harry and he heard glass shatter.
“Hermione, Ginny, get down,” said Ron and he too sent a disarming spell into the fog. He heard Crabbe grunt and he figured that the spell must have hit him.
“Stupefy,” shouted Draco and Harry ducked. He heard one of the owl cages hit the floor and a loud hoot. The fog started to clear up and Harry could see the outline of Draco. He headed towards him and hit him in the face and he hit the wall. Hedwig flew up into the air and circled around their heads, her cage on the floor.
“Hedwig, get back in your cage,” yelled Harry but she flew towards Draco. Draco stood up, pulled out his wand, and yelled “Stupefy”. The spell was meant for Harry but it had hit Hedwig. It seemed to happen in slow motion. The spell hit the bird in the chest and she seemed to have frozen in mid-air. Everyone looked at her as she fell slowly to the floor and lay there like a crumpled rag doll. Harry heard a scream behind him but at the same time, did not hear it. He looked at Malfoy to see his face in shock. Malfoy looked at him, turned around, and disappeared with a loud crack. The world seemed to come back to life in Harry’s eyes. He dropped his wand and bent next to Hedwig. Ron, Hermione and Ginny came crawling towards him. Hermione had her hands over her mouth and Ginny had tears in her eyes. Harry picked up Hedwig and gently shook her but she did not move.
“Do you think she’s…” started Hermione.
“Don’t even say it,” said Harry rather rude.
Almost like if what Harry said was a cue, a golden flash lit up the room and a very beautiful girl appeared. She had white hair and white eyes. She was dressed in long white robes and her long hair was tied up with a white ribbon. She looked around at all of them and then she glided to Harry and took Hedwig away from him forcefully.
“What the hell are you doing?” screamed Harry.
She put Hedwig on the floor, kneeled down, put both hands on Hedwig, closed her eyes, and started to mutter words.
“Get away from her!” screamed Harry and he took out his wand. He started towards her but a great rush of wind blew through the compartment and he fell back. Red and gold flashes of light came through her hands. Harry lifted his wand to curse her but Hermione grabbed him.
“NO HARRY! She’s not hurting her…she’s…she’s healing her,” she said. Harry looked at her like she was crazy. The wind stopped and the girl stood up and looked at them and they stared back. Her white hair turned brunette and had red streaks in it. Her white eyes turned green and her robes turned back to black and they could see the Gryffindor pin pinned to it. She picked up Hedwig and gave her to Harry and with a crack, the girl disappeared.
“What the bloody hell was that about?” asked Ron. Harry looked down at Hedwig to see her moving.
“She’s alive!” said Harry surprised.
“I told you,” said Hermione sitting back down on her seat. Hedwig opened her eyes and hooted feebly. Harry picked her up and put her in her cage where she stood hooting.
“Who was that and how is she able to heal people or animals?” asked Ginny. They all got back to their seats except for Harry who saw that the door to their compartment was shattered. Using his wand, he made the glass fly back into the frame and he sat down.
“So, who was that?” he asked again.
“She was beautiful, I’ll tell you that,” said Ron smiling.
“She is a Giver of Life. I’ve read about them. They are born every hundred years and they have the power to heal people who are dead. The blood runs in the family and each member of that family has abnormal abilities but only one of them will be able to fully heal. She, I guess, is the next in her generation to be a Giver of Life. I’ve never seen a picture of one before though. I thought that they would look…well…different. And now that I mention it, she does look familiar,” finished Hermione picking up Crookshanks again.
“So you’ve seen her around?” asked Harry.
“I have too. At least I think I have. In Hermione’s dorm,” said Ginny.
“Yeah, she keeps to herself though. Her hangings are always drawn around her bed. She doesn’t talk to anybody,” replied Hermione.
“Why? I mean she can’t hurt anybody. She actually helps,” said Ron.
“Well that’s the problem. In the book I’ve read, it says that this power is both a blessing and a curse. In her lifetime, she will encounter problems and one of them will be letting someone very important to her die. She will not be able to heal that person no matter how hard she tries. So I am guessing that she does not want to get close to anybody,” said Hermione.
“Well, if you see her, tell her I said thanks,” said Harry.
“Sure,” replied Hermione.
They didn’t talk much during the remainder of the journey. Finally, the train stopped at Hogsmeade station. They all went outside with great difficulty since everybody was trying to get off at the same time. It was freezing on the tiny platform but they heard the familiar voice of their big friend and that was enough to make anybody smile.
“Firs’ years this way! Firs years!” called Hagrid. Terrified looking first years walked slowly and silently up to him. Hagrid caught their eyes and winked at them. They were all shunted to the road outside the station and Harry’s stomach gave a jolt. There stood the fleshless looking Thestrals. Hermione walked next to Harry and taking his hands, whispered, “look away.” The four of them got into a carriage and rattling and swaying, the carriages moved in a line up the road.
The carriages halted near the stone steps leading up to the oak front doors and Harry got out first. The rest also left the carriage and joined the crowd hurrying up the stone steps into the castle. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
*Note: The fights that they are referring to happened in my version of Half-Blood Prince that I wrote. Malfoy and his pals always started trouble and he ended up getting suspended for a while.*
