“I'm an Æthereal.” replied Joe. Lydia looked at him skeptically. “An what the hell is an ath- an er- what is it?” “I’m an æthereal. It’s kinda hard to explain. I’ve never really had to explain it to anyone. "Well…” with a sheepish smile he confessed, “I’ve haven’t even told anyone.” Joe thought for a moment and put his hand on his forehead. He put his hand down, leaving the front of his mahogany colored hair sticking up. Lydia impulsively shivered when she saw it. He looks so hot right now! Why can’t I just stop being such a bitch?! Lydia looked away. “Maybe I should just show you,” Joe said after a moment. “Ok, come here” Lydia forward slowly until she was in front of Joe. Joe placed both his hands on her shoulders, and Lydia had to try her hardest to suppress a shiver and steer her thoughts into a different direction. Joe closed his eyes, and Lydia looked nervously at his face, 6 inches away from hers. What does this fool think he is doing? Joe smiled after she thought that, and Lydia scowled. In an instant, the room dissolved into a bright white nothing. There were no visible walls, no ceiling, and the only thing Lydia could be sure was there, was the floor they were standing on. Lydia squinted from the sudden change of brightness, just to find herself in another environment, this time, the first thing she saw was a glaring sun. Joe was no longer holding her, and she lowered her face from the vast, clear blue sky and looked around. She saw tall brown grasses and a village of small makeshift huts. Lydia was confused. Where was she? The dry appearance around her suggested she was in the Middle East, or Africa. Her heart pounded, No, it couldn’t be, he couldn’t have… Her disbelief was confirmed as she saw a jeep move among the huts, with a small family inside. The family filed into one of the resident huts with things such as food and medicine. Lydia suddenly ran towards the parked jeep, surprising Joe, who had been right behind her. Joe was still lost as to where they were and why they were there. He had chosen to take them to the place Lydia most thought of, most dreamt of and desire most to be there. Why would Lydia wanna be in Africa? Joe questioned, as he took off sprinting after her. He looked down, and realized neither of them had made any tracks in the sand. His eyes widened, and he yelled after Lydia. She stopped ten feet away from the jeep. She had tears ion her eyes. Panting Joe said, “We’re in the past. Nobody can hear us, or see us or…” Joe stopped as Lydia’s eyes stared at a large army jeep came rolling out of the dust toward them. Joe could see, the army jeep was from the Sudan government. So they were in Africa. The ground to tremble slightly and all life disappeared. No people, no animals, there was only an unnatural silence. This can not be good, thought Joe, and he dragged Lydia behind one of the huts. Then, numerous jeeps and soldiers swarmed the area, and the place was full of soldiers in dark green suits, equipped with guns and other numerous weapons. Then the screaming started. Flames suddenly enveloped the humble huts one by one, being lit by the soldiers. They could hear guns being shot, and each time, someone’s scream cut short, life like a small flame suddenly snuffed. But worst of all, was when one fallen man tried to plead for his family’s lives, he was laughed at. The laugh deep, not caring he was about to kill innocent people. He kicked the man, and advanced upon him and his family. Joe couldn’t watch. He glanced toward Lydia and noticed she was searching for something. She was pacing behind two huts, face tensed. Joe wondered how Lydia could have anything to do with this. Finally, they saw they saw a man, a teenage boy, and a woman carrying her crying daughter sneak out of the back of a hut to their right. They looked to be American and spoke in tense, afraid whispers as they decided the best way to get out of there. The girl who looked to be about 5 stopped crying suddenly, and they looked up and noticed an officer coming their way. He entered the hut, asking something very harshly and loudly. There were screams. The mother made a sign of the cross as the family disappeared into the tall grasses. Lydia took off after them. Joe managed to stay right behind her this time. He looked at her face, trying to figure out what was going on. Lydia’s face clearly expressed fear, anxiousness, and she was on the verge of tears. Of course, so would anyone else who had just witnessed what they had. Suddenly the grass ended, they stumbled out into a clearing just in front of a small forest made of gnarled trees.
