Chapter 6: Warning and Memory
The entrance hall was alight with torches and echoing footsteps could be heard as the students crossed the stone floor for the double doors that lead to the Great Hall and the start-of-term feast. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny walked into the Great Hall to see the four long House tables filling up with students under the black rainy ceiling which was just like the sky they could glimpse through the high windows. Candles floated in midair all along the tables and slivery ghosts were floating about the hall greeting students. As they walked to the Gryffindor table, Harry was greeted by waves by a few people from all the houses, including Slytherin. The moment they reached Gryffindor table, Dean jumped up and greeted Ginny with a long kiss, one that Ron did not think was acceptable, and they all sat down. Hermione and Harry sat on one side and Ron and Ginny, who sat next to Dean, sat opposite of them. “Hiya Harry. How was your summer?” asked Seamus shaking his hand. “Excellent Seamus and yours?” replied Harry. “Ok I guess.”
They all gazed up at the staff table and saw most of the teachers there except for Hagrid and McGonagall. Harry’s eyes met Dumbledore’s and Dumbledore gave him a wink. Sitting in his high-backed golden chair at the center of the long staff table, he was wearing bloody-red robes scattered with silvery stars and a matching hat. Harry moved along the table and he saw Snape who Harry could have sworn was looking at him a minute ago. “There’re three empty seats. Why are there three empty seats?” asked Hermione worriedly. “You think Dumbledore couldn’t find a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher?” asked Ron. “I bet he did, he always does. Can’t nothing get past Dumbledore,” replied Dean smiling. Harry smiled back at him and looked back at the staff table to see Hagrid making his way to the very end of the table. He took his seat, looked at Harry, and also winked at him. Harry smiled back at him. Hagrid’s arrival meant that the first years must have crosses the lake and reached the castle, and sure enough, a few seconds later, the doors from the entrance hall opened. A very long line of very scared-looking first years entered, led by Professor McGonagall, who was carrying a stool. On the stool sat an ancient wizard’s hat, heavily patched with a wide rip near the tattered brim. Silence filled the hall of the Great Hall. Harry’s eye caught on one particular first year. A girl who had one of her Hogwart’s book open, not paying attention to where she was stepping. She, like Hermione, had very long bushy hair, though it was tied up in a ponytail. This reminded Harry a great deal of Hermione. He looked at her to see her staring at the same girl with tears in her eyes. The first years lined up in front of the staff table facing the rest of the rest of the students. Professor McGonagall placed the stool carefully in front of them, then stood back. A very small boy behind of the stool stepped back scared. The whole school waited with anticipation. Then the rip near the hat’s brim opened wide like a mouth. The scared boy in behind the stool fainted and fell to the floor and murmur filled the hall. “Heart of a lion, that one is,” said Ron. Professor McGonagall chose to ignore the boy for now and the girl with the book rolled her eyes at him. The Sorting Hat burst into song:
Seventh years are leaving, First years arriving, Find someone worth believing, Cause you’ll need them for surviving. We’ll need each other to walk along There’s danger lurking near, Believe that this is not just a song We will be facing fear. My words, use as warning Though I may just be a hat, Many will be in mourning I know what’s false or fact. Ravenclaw, we’ll need your smarts, Gryffindor, your strength. Even Slytherin will gain a heart, Hufflepuff will go great length. This year is when it all starts Use your magic and mind Your lesson: Defense Against the Dark Arts, 50 years ago is where we’ll rewind. Wish I can help, but good luck to all My job here is to sort It won’t be fun; it’s no Yule Ball, Live life, cause it may be short Forgive me if I’ve scared you, First years come now to me. This song was sang to warn you, Now I’ll place you in the house you’ll be!
The hat became motionless once more but instead of applause, muttering broke out through the hall. The first years looked even more terrified than before. Harry remembered the Sorting Hat giving a warning in his fifth year but none like this. This time, it made it sound like everybody was in danger, which was true. Someone in the Great Hall started clapping. Everyone looked up to the staff table to see Dumbledore clapping enthusiastically. McGonagall joined in and then applause broke out. “Branched out a bit more this year hasn’t it?” exclaimed Ron. As the applause died out, Professor McGonagall lowered her eyes to her long piece of parchment and called out, “Brizon, Irene.”
A pretty girl with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes walked forward and put the hat on her head. The hat fell down below her eyes. The rip near the brim opened again and shouted, “HUFFLEPUFF!”
Applause broke out at the Hufflepuff table as she girl walked over, smiling, to their table and sat down. “Evans, Mark,” said McGonagall and a boy with long shaggy hair walked forward, sat on the stool, put the hat on his head, and waited. “GRYFFINDOR!” shouted the hat and the boy marched joyfully to the Gryffindor table. He was welcomed with pats on his back. The line slowly thinned and Harry could hear Ron’s stomach begging for food. Zoie-Ann Marshall became a Slytherin; Kishauna McDonald became a Ravenclaw, and the fainted boy still remained on the floor until his name was called. “Thistle, Thomas Jr.” Professor McGonagall lowered the parchment and looked around. Harry had heard that name before somewhere…
“Do you think he’s related to Mr. Thistle from Godric’s Hollow?” asked Hermione. Of course, how could forget. The guy who owned Godric’s Inn was named Thomas Thistle. But he never mentioned a son. Professor McGonagal scanned the students that was left and sighed. She looked at the girl with the book and spoke. “Miss Wheeler, can you please wake up Mr. Thomas please?” The girl rolled her eyes and closed her book. She put it in her robes pocket and pulled out her wand. She bent down and disappeared behind the stool. Second later with a flash from her wand, the boy stood up again and shook his head. “Doesn’t she remind you of someone?” asked Ron eyeing Hermione. “Oh shut up Ron!” said Hermione rolling her eyes. “Point proven,” replied Ron to Harry and he laughed. The boy went up to the stool and put on the hat. “Most likely a…” started Ron but…
“GRYFFINDOR!” screamed the hat and Ron dropped his jaw. “I was thinking a Hufflepuff,” said Ron. “Well you were right, he does have the heart of a lion,” replied Ginny. The boy went over to the Gryffindor table and put his head down. “Umbridge, Tanya.” A small squat girl with long, curly mouse-brown hair in which she wore a pink band walked up to the stool. “Umbridge? Umbridge? Do you think…” asked Hermione. “It does look like her,” replied Seamus. “GRYFFINDOR!” shouted the hat and she walked over to the table and sat next to the Thomas Thistle Jr. Max Veelington became a Slytherin and then there was only one girl left. “Wheeler, Alyssa.” She girl with the book walked up, took her seat on the stool and put on the hat. “GRYFFINDOR!” shouted the hat again and she walked over to the table and sat next to Hermione who smiled at her. Professor McGonagall picked up the hat and stool and marched them away as Professor Dumbledore rose to his feet and looked around the hall, beaming at the students. “Welcome all welcome all,” said Dumbledore in a ringing voice, his arms stretched wide, “to another year at Hogwarts. It is great to have all our old hands back and to see our newcomers all bright and ready to learn. I have many announcements to make this term. But since I see most of you staring at me hungrily, I shall say, tuck in!” There was an outbreak of applause as Dumbledore waved his hands and sat down. Food appeared out of nowhere on the five long tables. Dumbledore threw his beard over his shoulders to keep it out of his food and be began chatting animatedly to McGonagall. On the table were dishes of chicken, vegetables, bread, sauces, meats, deserts, and pitchers of pumpkin juice. “Excellent,” said Ron with a voice of longing and he started piling food onto his plate as chatter filled the hall.

When they were almost done eating, a small squat girl with long, curly mouse-brown hair came up to them. “Hi, are you Harry Potter?” asked the girl. They turned around and Ron snorted. “Yes I am. Who asked?” replied Harry. “I did. Nice to meet you. I’m Tanya Umbridge as you might have heard and…” she started but Ron cut her off. “Umbridge? Are you in any way, shape, or form related to Dolores Umbridge?” he asked rather rudely. Hermione gave him a stern look and turned back to the little girl who was eyeing Ron. “Yes. I am her niece and I just stopped by to apologize for what happened two years ago with you all and her. I heard about it from my mom. She works at the Ministry and she is not very fond about my aunt either,” said Tanya. “I can see why,” said Ron and Tanya turned and faced him. “Excuse me but I think I was talking to Mr. Potter here and I’d appreciate it if you stayed out of this. You and your heartless body. Thank you very much.” Harry and Hermione looked at the girl astounded and Ginny muffled a laugh. Ron dropped the cake he had in his hand and glared at the girl. “Well, please accept my apologies. I’ll be going now since I see I’m not welcome by all. Thank you,” she said again. He turned on her heels and left. Ginny couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “Can you believe her?” shrieked Ginny who had tears running down her eyes now of laughing too hard. “Shut up Ginevra,” said Ron turning red. “Now you listen here, you and your heartless body…” said Ginny wagging a finger at Ron but she burst out laughing again and so did the rest of them. When everyone was done and the plates had disappeared from the tables, Dumbledore stood up again and silence filled the hall once more. “Now that we all have enjoyed another magnificent feast, I beg a few moments of your attention for the usual, and some unusual, start-of-term notices,” said Dumbledore. “First years, and a fair few of our older students, ought to know that the forest in the grounds is out of bounds to all students. Mr. Filch, our caretaker, has asked me once more to remind everyone, for the four hundred and sixty-fourth time, that under no circumstances is magic allowed in corridors between classes.”
BANG
The door of the Great Hall burst open and in stepped a man. Dumbledore stopped speaking and every eye was on the man and his strange appearance. He looked rather like an old lion. There were streaks of grey in his mane of tawny hair and his bushy eyebrows; he had keen yellowish eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles and a certain rangy, loping grace even though he walked with a slight limp. The man looked at the students as he walked up to the staff table and whispered something to Dumbledore then he sat down and exchanged a smile with McGonagall. “I am pleased to announce, our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor McClaggan,” said Dumbledore smiling and he and the rest of the teachers applauded the new Professor. Harry, Hermione, and Ron exchanged worried looks and then Dumbledore continued. “We have two new captains for two Hogwarts Quidditch teams this year. The new captain for Gryffindor will be none other than their very own seeker, Harry Potter.” Applause broke out through the Great Hall and Ron gave Harry thumbs up. “Our new captain for the Slytherin team will be none other than their own seeker, Draco Malfoy.” Applause broke out at the Slytherin table as Harry and Malfoy glared at each other, Malfoy smirking. “We also have a new Head Boy and a new Head Girl this year and they both come from Gryffindor,” said Dumbledore as cheers broke out from the Gryffindor table again. McGonagall was beaming. “The new Head Girl will be none other than Miss Hermione Granger.” Hermione looked shocked and tears started streaming down her eyes as she turned red. Harry kissed her on the cheek and she blushed even more. “Our Head boy will be Mr. Harry Potter who is also from Gryffindor house!” said Dumbledore and louder cheers erupted from the Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff tables. When the laughter died out, Dumbledore smiled and continued: “Everybody please bear with me as I have two more announcements then I will leave you all to go to sleep. We will continue the school paper and it will have the same name, The Hogwarts Inquiry but different people will have different jobs this year. First, the gossip column will be done by Pansy Parkinson of Slytherin, the joke section by Anthony Brackshaw of Ravenclaw, photographs will be taken by Colin Creevey of Gryffindor, and last but not least, the sports section by my very own great great granddaughter, Jeanette Griffin!” As he said this, applause and muttering broke out through the Great Hall. Dumbledore never mentioned that he had a relative in Hogwarts, but then again, Harry never asked. “A great great granddaughter?” exclaimed Ron and they all shrugged. “Now, I have one more announcement before you all go to sleep. The best announcement yet! Hogwarts, will be hosting a School Quidditch World Cup. This will take place between wizarding schools around the world. Some from Ireland, Bulgaria, Africa, and more! The four Hogwarts team will battle it out to see who will represent Hogwarts during this rather exciting event. The schools will be coming soon and by then, we should have a team to represent us. The winning school will receive a golden and glass Quidditch cup and each member of the winning team will receive 500 galleons!” Cheers erupted through the hall. Some people were even standing on their seats. “Not to take favorites but I would like to see the cup in our trophy room and no where else! That concludes our announcements and will the head boy, girl, and the columnist please report to the front. Prefects, please lead your house to their common rooms!” Dumbledore’s voice roared through the noisy crowd. Everyone got up and Harry could hear the prefect calling the first years to follow them.

“I’ll see you later then,” said Ron and he walked off with Ginny and Dean. Harry and Hermione made their way up to the teachers table along with four other people. “Harry look, it’s that girl from the train!” whispered Hermione poking Harry anxiously. Harry looked up and saw a very pretty girl with long dark brown hair with red streaks down to her elbows. She had green eyes and Harry noticed that she had a very feminine shape. One that any boy would fall for. “Do you think she’s…” started Harry. “Of course, she’s the only one that we never saw before…she has to be,” replied Hermione. They reached the teachers table and Dumbledore addressed Harry and Hermione first. “You two have been given the privilege to be the school leaders. You’ve shown me through out the seven years that I’ve watched you, that you have the abilities to be leader. So I leave this job to you and I hope you won’t let me down,” he said, his bloody-red robes shining. “We promise Professor,” said Hermione and he winked. “You may go,” said Dumbledore. Harry looked at McGonagall and she smiled at them, tears in her eyes. Pansy was looking at them frowning and Hermione smiled at her. Harry could have sworn that Jeanette was also looking at them but when he looked at her, her eyes were rooted to the floor. Harry and Hermione walked out of the Great Hall talking. “She really looks lonely,” said Hermione frowning a bit. “I know. Do you think we should talk to her?” asked Harry. “Yeah, I will and I’ll tell her you said thanks for what happened on the train,” replied Hermione. They walked up the rest of the seven floors in silence until they reached the fat lady’s portrait which had her friend, Violet, sitting next to her. “So, the trouble makers become Heads eh?” said Violet rather rudely. Hermione raised an eyebrow. “Shut up Vi. Two most brilliant students in the school,” hissed the fat lady. “Oh please. If these two…” “Pig Snout!” said Hermione. “Don’t you cut me off…” started Violet and the portrait swung open. “Hey, close the portrait. I want a word with that girl.” They walked in to cheers and applause from what seemed like the whole of Gryffindor house. “Nice one guys,” said Dean. “Good job Harry,” said Seamus. Ginny came over and hugged Hermione and they started to talk. The portrait swung open again and in came Jeanette and Colin. Colin immediately started snapping pictures with his camera and Jeanette headed for the girl’s dorm. Harry looked at Hermione and she nodded. “C’mon Ginny,” she said and they headed after Jeanette. They Gryffindor party ended when Hermione came back down and insisted, as a Head, that everyone head up to their dorms. They all knew better than to mess with her and soon, the common room was deserted. Harry lay thinking about what lay ahead of him. He had his locket still around his neck but he was not thinking about that. What if Voldemort came to Hogwarts? What if Voldemort killed him? Stop Harry! No one is going to kill you. But Voldemort gets stronger everyday and what if I don’t have the power to beat him. I’m only seventeen years old. Yes but he has power the Dark Lord knows not. Remember the prophecy Harry! All you have to do is unlock it. Likes it’s that easy. Just go to sleep. I don’t know why you’re thinking of this anyway. He was battling with himself. Half of him just wanted to kill Voldemort and get it over it but half of him what too scared of what is to come. He sighed and sat up on his bed. He took his wand from his bedside table and put it up to his temple. He put his thoughts into the Pensieve and watched it as it swirled around. Then for the first time since the train ride, he remembered the locket. He took it off his neck and examined it. A light golden glow came from it as he turned it in his hand. He looked around the room to make sure that nobody was watching but all he heard and saw were the rest sleeping and snoring. He tried to open the locket but it didn’t. He turned it around in his palm and saw more carving on the back and for the first time again, he noticed something. They weren’t just carvings, they were words. He turned the locket back to its front and turned it sideways and read: “James”. As he whispered the words, the carvings glowed so much that it lit up the room then, they disappeared. He turned it around and read, “Lily”. He whispered the word again and just like last time, the words glowed and disappeared; then he heard a click. He tried to open the locket again and this time, it opened. It floated off his hand while it opened. Harry stared inside of it but couldn’t see anything because of the smoke inside. The smoke started to rise out of it and more could be seen forming. Harry backed up and kneeled on his bed and he raised his hand to touch the smoke but the chain of the locket grabbed his wrist. He tried to unloosen it but it got tighter and the next thing he knew, he was pulled forward into the smoke and into the locket. He was spinning very fast around the smoke and that was all he saw. Then words started to appear in the smoke one at a time. “The…worst…you…will…see…for…it’s…scarier…than…a…banshee…and…
now…please…don’t…cry…for…they…had…to…die.” Harry looked puzzled then it hit him. The locket was found at his parent’s house…he would see when they died. He tried to move. Maybe there was a way that he could stop and not go any further but he couldn’t feel anything. He looked down and saw that his body was swallowed by the smoke and he closed his eyes until…BAM…he hit the floor.

Harry looked up from the floor to see a circular room with baby blue walls. The room had a TV, couches, a fire place, and a rocking chair at the corner and in it sat a lady. A lady with flaming read hair and she was carrying a baby. Harry’s jaw dropped while he stood up to his feet. He was staring at his mom, who was asleep and carrying a baby Harry. Harry walked over to them but they did not stir. He raised a hand as if to touch her but his hand just went through her like a ghost’s hand. He heard footsteps coming from behind him and jumped. He spun around to see a tall man wearing a clock walking towards them. It was James Potter. He had very untidy hair and wore round spectacles. Harry felt as if he was seeing himself, only older. The man ignored Harry and bent down in front of Lily and baby Harry and prodded her lightly. She stirred and opened her eyes. “James? Wha…what?” she asked rubbing her eyes. “It’s time to feed Harry Lil,” replied James with a smile on his face. Harry sat down on the floor and watched. “I brought your food.” He gave her a bottle of milk and she lightly woke Harry who instantly smiled at his mom and grabbed her cheek. The Harry sitting on the floor wiped his eyes as tears started to fall. This was everything he missed. He did not remember any of this and he would never experience it again. Lily started feeding baby Harry and James kissed her on the cheek. BANG
“What the hell was that?” shouted James and he ran to the window. Lily stopped feeding Harry and looked up at James, worry in her eyes. The Harry on the floor stood up in worry also. “James, what is it?” asked Lily. James turned around; his eyes wide open. “What is it James?” asked Lily again although she already knew what was wrong. “Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!” screamed James and he pulled out his wand. Lily threw the bottle away from her, hosted Harry up on her side, and stumbled out of the room up the nearest stairs. “Alohomora!” yelled a voice from behind the door. James turned to see the door burst open and Harry’s scar seared with pain for there was Lord Voldemort. Voldemort broke out in a high-pitched laughter with his wand pointing at James. “Where is the boy?” hissed Voldemort. “Stupefy!” yelled James and a red jet of light burst out of his wand towards Voldemort, who deflected it and kept on walking into the house. “Impediments!” hissed Voldmort and James flew back and hit the TV, which shattered into pieces. James stood up and pointed his wand at Voldemort again. “Where is the boy?” hissed Voldemort again with a hint of rage in his voice. “Expelliarmus!” shouted James but Voldemort disappeared and appeared behind him. “Expelliarmus!” came the voice of Voldemort behind him and James’ wand shot out of his hand. “Impedimenta!” James shot back again and this time, he hit the rocking chair and broke it into pieces. He stood up shakily, bleeding, and grimy. “DAD! NO!” shouted Harry, tears streaming down his eyes. “Where is the boy, Potter? This is my last time!” warned Voldemort, eyes flashing dangerously. “I’ll never tell you…you’ll have to get through me first!” said James and with all the energy he could muster, he threw a vase at Voldemort, who blasted it apart. “Filthy being. AVADA KEDAVRA!” yelled Voldemort and a green flash filled the room. “NOOOOOOOOOO!” came two voices. Harry and Lily had screamed as James hit the floor, dead. Harry and Voldemort looked up to see Lily holding Harry on the second floor, tears streaming down her eyes. “Stupefy!” hissed Voldemort at them but she ran out of the way in time, covering Harry. The spell hit the wall and blasted a hole in it. Voldemort disappeared and Harry ran up the stairs to follow him. Lily ran into Harry’s room and locked the door with her wand. She stumbled and fell with him as she tried to run to the door at the other end of the room. Voldemort appeared on the other side of the door, Harry trailing behind him, holding his burning scar. Voldemort flicked his wand at the door and it burst into pieces and Harry heard a screaming come from the room. “Mum,” whispered Harry and he ran through Voldemort into the room to see his mom on the floor cowering over Harry, shielding him. “Please not Harry! Not Harry! Please—I’ll do anything!” she pleaded not looking at Voldemort. “Just stand aside little girl,” hissed Voldemort. Lily turned and faced him, tears streaming down her eyes and she was still shielding Harry. “Please not Harry! Not Harry! Please not Harry!” she begged. “Stand aside, you silly girl…stand aside, now…” “Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead…” “You don’t understand you filthy mudblood. Stand aside NOW!”
“Not Harry! Please…have mercy…have mercy….”
“You silly girl. AVADA KEDAVRA!” hissed Voldemort and another green flash and Lily’s scream filled the room. Harry saw her figure fall to the floor and he almost fainted. He dropped himself and crawled next to his mom. Please let this end. Please…
Voldemort made his way over to Harry, who was smirking at him. “You filthy half-blood. All this over you…AVADA KEDAVRA!” screamed Voldemort and another green flash lit up the room. Harry’s scar felt like it burst open and three ear-splitting yells filled the room. Baby Harry was on the floor twitching like mad and screaming. Older Harry grabbed his scar and was screaming on the floor next to Lily. Voldemort’s body was turning into smoke, dark smoke, and it was floating away from him. His red eyes were wide open in pain and his mouth was open in a scream. Flashes were coming from his body and his body, or the smoke that was his body, turned and floated away from the room very fast. Harry was still on the floor clutching his scar when a silver smoke substance devoured him and the next thing he knew, he was on the floor of his dormitory still clutching his scar. “Harry, are you ok? Harry!” yelled a voice. The pain in his forehead started to die away and he opened his eyes a little to see Ron standing over him with Neville, Seamus, and Dean behind him. Ron helped Harry up and sat him on his bed. “What happened?” asked Ron anxiously. Neville put his hand to his mouth. “The…locket…” panted Harry. “What happened with the locket?” asked Ron puzzled. “It…it took me inside. And I saw…” Harry looked at Ron. “I saw Voldemort kill my parents.” The four boys gasped and Neville wimpered. *** “You actually saw Voldemort kill them? I mean…you actually saw it happen?” asked Hermione with her eyes wide open. “Yes, Hermione. How many times do I have to tell you that?” said Harry angrily. “But, so that means the locket really worked. I guess it only shows you bad things. I think you should trash it Harry,” said Ron. They were at breakfast the next day and Ron had told Harry about what happened the night before even before Harry saw her. “No! Shut up Ron. He shouldn’t just throw it away like that. It doesn’t only show bad things,” said Hermione frowning at Ron. “How do you know that?” asked Ron. “Because, like I’ve said before, I’ve read about them. They show you different things each time you open it. Gosh Ron, don’t be so thick-headed,” said Hermione rolling her eyes. She took a forkful of eggs and put it in her mouth. “I’m not thick-headed. I’m just trying to help Harry. And…” started Ron. “Just drop it!” said Harry annoyed. He was really tired of them arguing. It’s been going on for seven years now. “Are you two ever going to give up? Anyway, Hermione did you talk to Jeanette last night?” “Oh yeah, I did. Ginny and I did actually. She seemed really nice. And she said your welcome but it would have been easier if you did not try to curse her,” she said smiling. “Yeah sorry,” said Harry. “So why hasn’t she been talking to anybody?” asked Ron. “Like I said before, she is scared that she will end up hurting someone. But I think she’s lightning up a little. She has Defense Against the Dark Arts with us after breakfast so maybe you guys can talk to her. She also said she really wants to try out for the Gryffindor Quidditch team but again, she’s scared,” finished Hermione lamely. “She should though. We need three chasers,” said Harry. The bell rang at that instant and they all grabbed their bags and headed for the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.

Chapter 7: Harry’s Match
Five minutes later when Harry, Ron, and Hermione got to the class, they were surprised to see a lot of people in front of the class waiting for Professor McClaggan. Their usual classes were smaller. “Well if it isn’t Potter and the loser crew” drawled a voice behind them. They turned to see Malfoy and his gang heading towards the class. “Go screw yourself Malfoy,” said Ron and Malfoy’s face lost color. “How dare you…” he started. “Move boy!” growled a voice from behind him and Malfoy was pushed out of the way. Professor McClaggan, who had a dark blue cloak on, limped over and when he walked past Harry, he eyed him. Harry was very much reminded of the fake Moody and that was not a good thought. McClaggan opened the door and beckoned them all to follow him inside. They walked in the classroom and all of them were surprised. The room was completely cleared of all the desks that it held before and the room seemed slightly bigger. “Everyone get in and the last person close the door behind you,” barked McClaggan. When everyone finally got in and the door slammed shut, the professor started speaking again. “Unless I am very much mistaken, you all are in your final year here and if I am mistaken again, you also have not had a proper duel in Defence Against the Dark Arts. And no, the DA does not count Mr. Potter,” added Professor McClaggan. “How did you know about that?” asked Ron. “Dumbledore must have told him,” answered Hermione. “So on that note, we are really going to start dueling this year. Today actually. I want half of you to go through that door,” he said pointing his wand at one end of the class and as he did, a door appeared. “The other half, will go through that door.” He pointed his wand to the other end of the class again and another door appeared then he started talking again. “You all will get in a line. When I’m ready to take two of you, red sparks will appear and one person from each room will come out ready to battle. I may trick you and send sparks in one room and not the other so one person may be out before somebody else. You have to be ready to battle, even if it is your best friend. It’s the only way you’ll survive in this world. No Death Eater will give you mercy, even if it is your best friend. So on that note, off you go,” he finished and they all separated. Harry, Ron, and Hermione started walking towards the door on the right but Professor McClaggan stopped them. “No! You three separate. Weasley, take the left door, Granger and Potter, take the right,” he barked at them. They looked at each other in amazement but split up. Harry and Hermione left accompanied by a number of people including Dean, Seamus, and Neville. They went into the room to find that it was very long. It was lit with torches lined up on the wall. They got into a line, Harry behind Hermione. They waited a few minutes until the red sparks came. Seamus took a deep breath, and walked out slowly. They all stood quietly and listened. They could hear spells and something hitting the floor. After a few minutes, everything was silence again. Another spark of light that appeared in their room told them that Seamus had lost the duel and Hermione walked out nervous. Again, they all listened and a yell came from the room where Hermione and someone else were dueling. It didn’t sound like Hermione. As a matter-in-fact, it sounded like Ron. Harry chuckled and after another couple of minutes, everything was silent again. People in the room started to sit on the floor but Harry’s wand was held tight in his hand and he waited right at the door. Flashes of light started coming from the room again which told them that Hermione had won the duel with Ron. They heard more thuds and in about two minutes, the duel ended. Red sparks appeared in the room Harry was in again and he took a deep breath. “Good luck, Harry,” said Neville. Harry smiled feebly at him and stepped out to see Jeanette Griffin. Her hair was tied up in a bun that looked much like McGonagall’s. Professor McClaggan was also standing there and Seamus, Ron, and Hermione were seated on the floor far from them. Harry and Jeanette just stood there and looked at each other for a couple of seconds. “WELL?” barked McClaggan. Harry raised his wand slowly but Jeanette acted first. “Expelliarmus!” she screamed and Harry’s wand flew out of his hand. Well if she wanted to play that way, it’s on, thought Harry. “Impedimenta,” she yelled but Harry dodged the spell and dived for his wand. He picked it up and shouted, “Impedimenta”. Jeanette was blasted off her feet, into the door, and fell on the floor. Oops, maybe that was a little too hard. Jeanette got up very quickly which took Harry by surprise. “Avis!” she shouted. Small, twittering birds flew out the end of her wand and soared towards Harry. Harry ducked and stood back up when all the birds disappeared into thin air. Jeanette had disappeared also. He looked around but did not see her. He looked at McClaggan to see him smirking. With a flash of light which threw Harry backwards, Jeanette appeared in front of him and smiled before she chanted very slowly: “Ferula”. Harry did not even have the chance to start to block it before a splint of bandages came from her wand and wrapped itself around his whole face. He tried his hardest to pull them off but they would not budge.

“C’mon Potter. You can do better than that,” barked McClaggan. “Yeah. C’mon Harry!” shouted Hermione. Harry pulled his wand to his face and he hushed, he said, “Diffindo!” The bandages tore off his face and he doubled over trying to catch his breath. He looked up at Jeanette to see her face a little worried. He smiled weakly and to her surprise, shouted “Scourgify!”. Instantly, she raised her wand and also said, “Protego!” Harry’s eyes widened and he started to choke as pink soap bubbles began to stream from his mouth. “Finite,” said Jeanette and the bubbles stopped. “STOP IT!” yelled Hermione standing up and pulling out her wand. She had a cut on her left eye. Jeanette bent over and tried to help Harry up, muttering “sorry”. “It’s ok,” relied Harry. “But I’m not done. IMPEDIMENTA!” shouted Harry and she was knocked off her feet and onto the floor. Harry looked over her to see her eyes closed. He prodded her a little bit with his foot and her eye lids popped open but her eyes were not bright and green anymore. They were white. She hopped up and waved her wand at Harry. Harry, who had not been expecting this, flew back, hit the wall, and slumped on the ground. “That’s enough!” yelled McClaggan walking over to Harry. He helped Harry get to his feet. Jeanette, Hermione, and Ron also ran over to him. “I am so sorry Harry,” said Jeanette, her green eyes now watery. “It’s ok. It was a duel. Congrats,” replied Harry smiling. “Good job everyone! But I know you can do better!” said Professor McClaggan at the end of class. At the instance, the bell rang and they all headed out the door. Jeanette caught up to Hermione, Harry, and Ron again. “Sorry again, Harry,” she said pleadingly. “It’s ok,” replied Harry smiling. Ron was gazing at her without blinking. “Hermione told me that you said you’d like to try out for chaser right?” “Umm yeah…but I don’t think…” started Jeanette blushing. “Perfect. Try outs will be tomorrow. Go for it, I’m sure you’ll be great at it. You’re great at dueling so why not come?” “Well…ok,” she said smiling. “Has anyone told you that you are very beautiful?” asked Ron. They all stared at him and he clapped his hands to his mouth and they all started to laugh, Ron turning red. “Thanks umm… Ron?” she said and Ron nodded. “You’re not bad yourself.” Ron smiled weakly and led them to their next class, Transfiguration. ***
