The Calling
“Hurry up, Andromeda. The barrier is about to close!” snapped a girl who was running while pushing a cart; her name was Bellatrix Black. Bellatrix was a very tall girl about to start her seventh and final year at Hogwarts. She had long black hair and heavy lidded eyes. She was very pretty but did not come across as the type to always snog with a boy but more like the one who nobody wanted to mess with. And to top it off, she had an air of arrogance that followed her wherever she went.
“I’m coming, goodness!” cried Bellatrix’s little sister Andromeda. Andromeda was the complete opposite of her big sister and she was reaching her fifth year at Hogwarts. She had bright pink spiky hair, and gleaming blue eyes.
“Can you please do something about your hair? Change it or something. Why not just leave it black like the rest of the family’s!” snapped Bellatrix at her sister. Andromeda was a metamorphmagus. She could change her appearance at will and it came in useful a lot.
“Because I don’t like black. Why does everyone have to be the same?” asked Andromeda.
“Disgrace!” spat Bellatrix and she turned back around and went through the barrier that led to Platform 9¾. Andromeda rolled her eyes and followed.
When they crossed the barrier, the familiar scarlet and gold engine was already releasing smoke and students were boarding the train.
“I’m going to meet Severus, Rodolphus, and the rest. Maybe I’ll see you later, maybe not. Hopefully the later,” added Bellatrix to Andromeda and walked away. “Hey…Black!” shouted a voice. She turned around and saw a tall skinny boy with greasy black hair and a hooked nose running towards her.
“Hello, Severus,” said Bellatrix. “Where’s everybody else?”
“Rodolphus is in the train with them. They’re saving us a seat. What took you so long?” asked Severus Snape.
“Andromeda,” said Bellatrix simply and Snape frowned.
“I really can’t believe she’s a Black, and in Slytherin. She’s just like that other Black. No offence to your family,” added Snape at the look on her face.
“As far as I’m concerned, Sirius Black is not my family. He lives with that Potter now anyway. They both don’t deserve to be in Slytherin. I think we’d better get on the train,” snapped Bellatrix.
When they reached their compartment, they opened the door to see Rodolphus Lestrange kissing a girl with short black hair tied up in a bun. Severus shook his head in annoyance and looked at Bellatrix. Her face had turned red and she pulled out her wand and waved it.
“Ouch!” cried the girl.
“Excuse me, Alecto, I need to put my stuff up!” snarled Bellatrix.
“You could have said excuse me you know, Bellatrix!” she said coldly. Rodolphus was slightly smiling. Bellatrix knew he didn’t care for Alecto Vice. All he wanted was a girl…and anyone would do. But Bellatrix had a thing for Rodolphus, although she never told anyone and she never liked Alecto anyway. Alecto always went around school, stealing boyfriends, and being as popular as can be.
“Well maybe if you weren’t too busy snogging, you would have seen me,” snapped Bellatrix. Alecto stood up and pulled out her want too. Bellatrix let out a cold harsh laugh.
“You wouldn’t dare!” she sneered. Alecto’s face contorted in rage.
“What’s going on?” asked a voice behind Bellatrix. She turned and saw three boys standing at the doorway. Gregory Goyle, who was bulky like his best friend who stood next to him; Vincent Crabbe. Next to them was a tall boy with black sleek black hair draped in all black; his name was Igor Karkaroff.
“Don’t tell me you guys are at it again!” said Karkaroff stepping between them. “And you, Severus, standing there. You two Rodolphus.” Rodolphus Lestrange’s smile immediately vanished from his face.
“Bella, just sit down,” said Lestrange in a forced calm voice. Bellatrix waved her wand at her luggage and it settled in a pile with the others.
“Don’t tell me you guys are going to spend your last year like this,” said Karkaroff.
“Oh shut up!” snapped Bellatrix. She swept past him, knocking Alecto over as she went, and sat down next to the window.
The year went by like it usually did. Alecto and Bellatrix were in fierce battles whenever they had the chance. Alecto went about he school bragging to anyone how rich her family was and what she would be doing once she left school.
“Who even listens to her?” asked Bellatrix one night when they were in their common room. “She thinks everyone likes her. Oh, how I would like to just…” and she made a snapping motion with her hands while glaring at Alecto, who was sitting talking animatedly with a crowd of Slytherin girls.
“I don’t know why you bug yourself so much, Bella. You’re family is easily the most popular in the school. Everyone knows of the Blacks,” said Lestrange. He was sitting with her on a green couch facing the fireplace. “And, everyone knows, you’re the most beautiful girl of the year.” She looked at him and he smiled.
Why is he doing this? Doesn’t he like Alecto, thought Bellatrix and before she knew it, he leaned in and kissed her. They were at it for a fair minute before…
“Diffindo!” shouted a voice. Bellatrix pulled away sharply and grabbed her face, which had a long bleeding gash on one side. She looked up to see Alecto pointing her wand at her, looking livid. Bellatrix immediately took out her wand and waved it and Alecto went spinning in midair and landed in a heap in front of the stairs that lead to the girl’s dormitory.
“Don’t you ever…” started Bellatrix raising her wand again but Rodolphus grabbed her arm. “Let go of me!”
“Bella…stop! Why…” screamed Rodolphus. Snape came running towards them and helped Alecto up. He had a cut on her lip and blood was running from her nose.
“She had it coming!” Bellatrix snarled.
“You…you...” panted Alecto.
“You what?” snarled Bellatrix. “Rodolphus, let go of…me!” She pushed him with all she had and he fell onto the couch. Bellatrix raised her wand once more but the common room door swung open and…
“Expelliarmus!” shouted a voice and her wand went flying out of her hand. She turned to see a chubby man staring at her with his wand raised.
“Professor Slughorn…” started Bellatrix.
“Enough! You two, come with me!” he said. She grabbed her wand, and followed, Alecto behind her.

“Now, I have received reports saying that you two have been fighting in the corridors, and in your common room. Am I correct?” asked Professor Dumbledore eyeing both of them through his half-moon spectacles.
“Yes, Professor,” said Alecto with her head down. Bellatrix, however, showed no humiliation. Her head was up and she was staring directly at Dumbledore.
“I shall warn you two for the last time,” said Dumbledore calmly, “If I hear that you two have been dueling again, I shall have to suspend you. You two will serve detentions with Mr. Filch this Saturday morning. Miss Vice, you may go. I need a word with Miss Black here.” Alecto got up, glared at Bellatrix, and left slamming the door behind her.
“We have encountered a problem, Miss Black…” started Dumbledore.
“I already said I won’t duel with her anymore, Sir,” she said annoyed.
“That is not the problem. This has to do with your family. Your immediate family excluding your two sisters,” said Dumbledore.
“What are you talking about?” asked Bellatrix, a hint of worry in her voice.
“I’m very sad to say, that your parents were attacked by Lord Voldemort and are dead,” said Dumbledore. Bellatrix’s eyes flashed and the color drained from her face.
“That’s not possible,” she said, her voice quivering with every note. “My parents supported him. They just would never join him. He would never kill one of the biggest pure-blood families…he wouldn’t…”
“That’s the problem. He wanted them to join him, when they refused, he killed them. I’m sorry Miss…”
“No!” snarled Bellatrix standing up. Dumbledore raised an eyebrow. “They are NOT dead. You have no idea what you are talking about you old fool!”
“Now hold on, Bella!” said Slughorn who was standing in the corner
“It will be in the Prophet tomorrow. If you would like to…” started Dumbledore, his voice now cold.
“Oh don’t act like you care. You don’t give a damn about me or my family. I want out!” she snarled and she turned around and the door sprung open. She ran out and down the stairs.
“Should I go for her, Dumbledore?” asked Slughorn.
“No, bring me her younger sister please, Horace,” said Dumbledore.
***
Bellatrix ran to the oak front doors and tried to pull them open but they wouldn’t open. She tried to open them with magic but they still didn’t open.
“Dammit!” she cried. Tears were streaming down from her eyes. Her parents were not dead. She wouldn’t believe it. She turned and ran for the stairs.
“Bella!” shouted a voice. She turned to see Rodolphus Lestrange. “Wait up!”
“Leave me alone!” she screamed and shot a spell at him and ran as fast as she can.
“Bellatrix…what’s wrong?” shouted Rodolphus chasing her. Bellatrix ran all the way to the astronomy tower and collapsed. She cried for about five minutes until the door sprang open.
“Bella, what happened?” asked Rodolphus. She hopped up and pointed his wand at him.
“Stay away from me. I hate you, I hate everyone!” she shouted and she climbed onto the edge of the tower
“NO!” shouted Rodolphus.
“Nothing is worth it!” she cried swaying on the edge of the tower. If she moved another inch, she’d fall to the ground and her death.
“Come down, Bella! Please!” he shouted. Bellatrix looked down at him unsteadily.
“He killed my parents! They’re dead,” she sobbed quietly.
“Please come down and tell me what happened,” he said. Bella took a deep breath in, fainted, and fell from the tower. Rodolphus ran and tried to grab her arm but missed.
“Bella!” he shouted as he watched her fall. He saw a dark figure underneath her. The figure pulled out a wand, waved it at Bella, and she slowed down as she hit the floor with a soft thud. She figure waved his wand at her body and it floated in midair and followed the person into the forest.
“Leave her alone!” cried Rodolphus and he shot a spell at the figure, which missed. The person stopped, looked up, and lowered it’s hood to reveal the face that haunted everyone’s dreams. Lord Voldemort’s red eyes flashed as he sent a stunning spell at Rodolphus, which hit him square in the chest, making him fall back on the tower.
Bellatrix stirred and slowly opened her eyes and let out a piercing scream. She collapsed on the floor. Voldemort looked at her.
“You…you…” whispered Bellatrix.
“Yes, me and I’ve come for you!” sneered Voldemort.
“What do you want from me?” asked Bellatrix scared. She shot a spell at him but he deflected it.
“Help me! Someone please!” screamed Bellatrix.
“No one will come. I’ve put a charm on the castle and no one can hear you,” said Voldermort.
“You evil…” she started but she got up and ran into the forest. Voldemort smiled coldly and disappeared. Bellatrix ran as fast as could, bumping into trees and tripping on vines. But she didn’t care. She needed to get away as fast as she could. Why her, of all people?
“Ahh!” she screamed and fell back. Voldemort had appeared in front of her, his red eyes flashing again.
“Please…please…no…” she cried.
“I’m not going to kill you, Bellatrix Black,” snapped Voldemort.
“Then what do you want from me?” she asked terrified.
“Your service. You have reached the calling. You have proven to be a worthy servant. All I want is your allegiance. Join me, Bellatrix. Don’t be a fool and die like your parents!” said Voldemort coldly.
“Don’t talk about them like that! Crucio!?” she cried. Voldemort deflected the spell.
“You are capable to produce a real unforgivable curse at the age of seventeen. Join me Bella, and if you help me, Bellatrix, the reward will be unimaginable,” said Voldemort holding out a hand. Bellatrix looked at it, and cried some more.
“Imagine a world with no mudbloods and no blood traitors. Just us pure-bloods and I promise you Bellatrix, when I take over, you will be rewarded like none other. Join me Bellatrix Black!” he said again but she just cried. “Join me, or die!” he snapped coldly. Bellatrix looked up at him and held out her hand and placed it upon his cold one.
“I will be your worthy servant, master,” she said sobbing more than ever.
“Good. You have made the right decision Bellatrix,” he said and they both disappeared.
The next time Bellatrix was seen, she led the fight against the aurors with the Death Eaters and her husband, Rodolphus Lestrange.
