Prologue: A Grandfather’s story
It was twilight and an eighty-six year old man sat on his front porch with his fifteen year old grandson and granddaughter. The year was 2069, and the world has changed in the last sixty-four years.
“Grandpa, did you ever love someone besides Grandma Hannah?”
“Yes, Gabby. I did at one time.” the old man pulled out a crinkled old picture of a young women out of his wallet. She had long brown hair that was pulled away from her face and silver rimmed glasses. Behind those glasses were sparkling hazel eyes. She was wearing a soft yellow sun dress and a beautiful and confident smile. In her hands she held a single sunflower. The scenery behind her was a beautiful field and mountains in the distance.
“Does Grandma know you still carry her picture?” Michael asked sitting at the old man’s feet, while his sister sat next to him. The Grandfather’s eyes be came misty as he told his young Grandchildren the tale of love, happiness and heartache.
“As a matter of fact, your Grandma found this picture about the time you two were born. I thought I had lost it. Her name was Elizabeth Makenna Andrews. They were friends, your Grandma and Lizzie. Even though Lizzie was a good four years older. She was so full of life and had a great personality. She loved to dance. I remember when we were about twenty-four, we use to go dancing every night. I remember when I saw something in her.“
“It was the summer of 2005 and I was a young man of twenty-two. I thought I knew everything in life. Anyway, I was a councilor at the local Muscular Dystrophy Camp. And she was a camper, who was to be graduating that year. I knew her for a number of years, but never really saw her in a certain way but that year was different. She came to camp, completely changed.”
“She held he head up higher and looked you in the eye, she use to put her head down whenever she passed someone. She seemed more confident in herself. Anyway, I‘m running away from myself........”
